Stages of the Development of New Vaccines
Phase 1: Small groups of healthy people receive the trial vaccine.
Phase 2: Relies on the immunology and to city results from phase 1. The vaccine is then given to people who have similar characteristics to those from whom the new vaccine is intended in order to expand the study.
Phase 3: The trials continue to monitor toxicity and immunogenicity on a much larger scale. The vaccine is given to thousands of people and tested for efficiency and safety. The vaccine must show to be safe and effective in natural disease conditions before being submitted for approval and then general production.
Phase 4: The trials monitor stages that collect data on vaccine usage, adverse effects, and long term immunity after the vaccine is licensed and marketed.
